Our relational approach

Why we have a relational approach

At east to west, we believe that meaningful and lasting change begins with relationships. Many children, young people, and families are currently struggling with emotional wellbeing and mental health challenges. With growing demand on services and lengthy waiting times, early and relational support has never been more important.

Our relational approach enables us to build trust, offer consistent emotional support and create safe spaces where young people feel heard, valuedd and understood. We are committed to journeying with each young person for as long as they need, walking alongside them through challenges and successes alike. This foundation of trust allows positive change to take place and equips young people to thrive

Our Support

Our relational approach is at the heart of everything we do. We focus on building genuine, trusting relationships that help young people feel seen, heard, and valued. Through one-to-one interventions and group work we create safe spaces where young people can explore their feelings, develop healthy coping strategies, and strengthen their connections with others. Our team works alongside each individual at their own pace, promoting resilience, emotional wellbeing, and hope for the future.

Our Approach

Our interventions are built on the belief that every child and young person is unique, with their own story and strengths. We use a variety of approaches designed to help young people take greater ownership of how they respond to challenges and situations.

  • Solution-Focused Coaching helps young people identify their own strengths, abilities and resources to create positive change. Rather than focusing on problems, this approach emphasises what's going well and what can be done differently, encouraging self-belief and forward thinking.

  • CBT-Informed Practise (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) supports young people to understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings and behaviours. By recognising and challenging unhelpful thought patterns, they can develop healthier ways of responding to difficult emotions and situations

  • Whole-Project Relational Approach ensures our work is embedded across the whole project whether that is in the school community, local GP or within the hospital. We collaborate with staff to create environments that prioritise connection, empathy and emotional safety helping every young person to feel supported and understood throughout their project experience.

Together, these approaches promote self-awareness, confidence and positive behavioural change. Our practitioners work alongside young people to explore emotions, identify strengths and develop strategies to THRIVE.

Use of assessment tools

To ensure our support is responsive and effective, we use east to west's bespoke assessment tools. These tools allow us to understand each young person as a whole. Recognising not only the areas we can support, such as confidence, relationships and copying strategies but also those we can't directly influence such as wider social challenges. By understanding this full picture, we can tailor our interventions to where they'll have the greatest positive impact. Our assessments also help us monitor progress, combining practitioner insight with the young person's own reflections to provide a clear view of emotional growth and wellbeing over time.

Goal Setting

We believe in working with young people, not just for them. Our goal based outcomes and goal setting process allow children and young people to take an active role in shaping their journey of support. Together, we identify meaningful, achievable goals that reflect what's most important to them. Throughout this process, we also measure the distance travelled. The progress a young person makes from where they began to where they are now. This helps them recognise their own growth, celebrate successes and see tangible evidence of positive change. This collaborative process encourages ownership, motivation and a sense of accomplishment as progress is made and celebrated along the way

Conclusion

Our relational approach is more than a method- it's a commitment to journey alongside children, young people and families with compassion, understanding and hope. By focusing on relationships, self-awareness and empowerment we help young people develop the confidence and resilience they need to thrive.
