At times, everyone feels worried or has problems that may be hard to talk about with those close to you. You may worry about whether they will understand, blame you or if you can trust them. That is when you may think about talking to the RE-Store Counsellor at your school. A Counsellor is someone you can talk to, someone who will listen and wont judge you or tell you what to do. A Counsellor will help you to work things out for yourself, help you make decisions and choices and enable you to look at things differently.

What kind of things can I tell the Counsellor about?

Whatever is on your mind. This may be worries about relationships going wrong, parents separating, bullying, losing someone special, feeling depressed, health worries, anxiety, self-harm or thinking about suicide. Whatever the problem may be your Counsellor will listen carefully and take what you say seriously.

Will the Counsellor tell anyone about what I say?

Everything you tell your Counsellor will be between you and them. They wont tell anyone anything you've said unless they have your permission or unless they think that you or someone else may be at risk or in danger, in which case they may need to get help from others to keep you safe. They will talk with you about this and together you'll find the best thing to do for you.

How does it work?

Seeing a counsellor might be your idea, or your parents' or a teacher's. You don't have to decide straight away. You can meet the counsellor first, to ask questions and find out more. Counselling is your choice, and whatever you decide is okay. If you say yes to Counselling then you'll start to meet your counsellor for 1-2-1 sessions over a few weeks where you can talk about what's going on in your life. The venue will be in your school but none of your friends or year group will be told about it so it remains private. How long you will see your Counsellor for will be decided between you and them but you will initially be offered six sessions lasting up to 40mins. The school may like to contact your parents/carers to let them know you are seeing a counsellor, but will not tell them the details. It may still be possible to come to counselling without your parents being told, and you can discuss this with the counsellor.

How do I find out more or ask to see the counsellor?

Speak to any adult in your school that you trust. They will help you make an initial appointment to talk to your school's head of learning support who has all the useful information to help you work out whether Counselling is right for you at this time. From there you can decide whether you'd like to have an initial appointment with a Counsellor where together you can work out the best way forward. Or alternatively you can email RE-Store through your school: restore@magnacarta.surrey.sch.uk or restore@salesian.surrey.sch.uk
